Review: Zack Ward’s Restoration
By MGDSQUAN - Apr 26, 2016

Little ghost girls in old houses are a staple in horror film history. They seem to go hand in hand almost synonymously and people always seem to eat up the story, no matter how many times pieces of the plot have been recycled. I, personally, find it a little weird that people are so involved with the “what horrible tragedy has befallen the innocent little girl” mystery, but, hey, here we are with another new one titled Restoration. Based on the people involved with this feature film, I knew the quality of production was going to be great, but what about the story progression? Does Restoration bring anything new to the subgenre? Read my review to find the answer.

Restoration is written, directed and produced by Zack Ward, most known for his character work in A Christmas Story (1983), Freddy vs. Jason (2003) and Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004). Restoration is Ward’s feature length directorial debut, an effort he created with co-writer and co-producer James Cullen Bressak. Lead cast members include Emily Roya O’Brien (Pernicious, “The Young and the Restless”), Adrian Gaeta (“The Acid Brotherhood,” Inner Demons), Zack Ward, Sarah Ann Schultz (Black Beauty, Wolvesbayne), Anna Harr, Nick Principe (Laid to Rest, Seed 2), Reatha Grey (“Bettie White’s Off Their Rockers,” Chocolate City) and Kevin Porter.

“While renovating their house, a young couple find a diary hidden in the walls, lost for 30 years. Opening the book releases the ghost of a child that haunts their dreams and waking life, driving them to find the cause of her death so they can can release her soul.” – Uncork’d Entertainment

To start things off, I’m not surprised that another horror film with James Cullen Bressack attached to it has secured a distribution deal. James Cullen Bressack is quickly emerging as one of the brightest (or should I say darkest?) faces in horror and he brings attention and a certain level of charm to anything he puts his hands on. What Zack Ward brings to the table, though, is history and the standard for professionalism that has been key to his decades long success. Both men know what they’re doing and proved to be an honorable pair when creating Restoration. I struggle to find a flaw, an error, a badly written piece of dialogue, or any production related critique, but I can’t find one. Restoration is a good old fashioned, supernatural horror flick that’s polished with gold (like Pernicious) and enthralling like fire. Well done, gentlemen!
From the opening credits that were somewhat animated and featuring a catchy tune, I knew that Restoration was going to be different… but I wasn’t expecting the way in which it would be different. The opening scene of a patient dying at the hospital, a character being burned and traumatized, a special family announcement… Restoration is one of the few horror films in its category that is actually capable of pulling emotions out of the viewer, which in return causes them to care about the characters and their safety. There’s not a single horror film archetype character to be found, so they all seem so realistic and developed; not to mention all of the characters were brought to life by incredibly talented actors. You can’t have suspense without emotion and Restoration delivers on both accounts.

Restoration contains a subtle type of horror, again, going back to the old school haunted house type of storytelling. There’s a couple instances where the horror is in your face, or there’s a jump-scare, but the horror really lies in the quiet moments when the story is progressing. You know shit is going down, you know something is coming, you know that something is going to be really bad, and all you can do is sit around and wait for it to happen. That is how you tell a story. You don’t always have to be shock and awe; sometimes you can let the viewers scare themselves with anticipation and subtle plot progression, the slow march towards disaster. There isn’t too much gore to be found here, but I found one death scene in particular to be equal parts funny and impressive. Also, props for creepy teddy bears… Lots and lots of creepy teddy bears.

Restoration is a cornucopia of genres – horror, science fiction and mystery – and there’s also elements like romance, drama and thrills thrown in for equal measure. It’s a roller coaster ride of emotions and contains a suffocating amount of suspense. It’s so much more than that, too, but I don’t want to include any spoilers. So, to answer my question above, Restoration brings two new things to the subgenre. One of which I’ve already named in my review… and the other you’ll have to watch for yourself to discover. Restoration hits VOD on May 3rd and is out on DVD July 5th. Final Score: 7.5 out of 10.

GRIT FILM WORKS FILMING 2 HORROR FILMS BACK TO BACK 1 STARRING REATHA GREY
Posted by anythinghorror on March 19, 2015
The production company Grit Film Works may be new on the scene, but they definitely aren’t newbies to filmmaking!! Grit Film Works is owned by filmmakers James Cullen Bressack and Zack Ward and these two guys the indie horror scene. Both have already made an indelible mark on the genre and I’m really looking forward to seeing what these two can accomplish by combining their efforts and resources. Bressack and Ward worked together on the 2014 TV movie, BLOOD LAKE, with Bressack directing and Ward as one of the stars.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Bressack and Ward are currently working on BETHANY and RESTORATION. BETHANY, which is currently filming, is written and directed by Bressack and stars Felissa Rose, Peter Jason, John Murray, Anna Harr, Olivia Rush, and George Murdoch:
Claire and her husband find themselves moving back into Claire’s childhood home only to have the abusive and traumatic memories of her mother come back to haunt her. As her husband starts to get more work, Claire finds herself mixed up in a fog of past and present with a mysterious figure haunting her memories. What is this small figure that is trying to reach out to her, and what does it want?
RESTORATION, which is written by Bressack and directed by Ward, is also currently filming. It stars Keith Jardine, Kevin Porter, Nick Principe, Pilar Schneider, Pam Hyatt, and Reatha Grey:
Restoration centers on a young doctor who moves to a new town with her husband while she completes her residency. Things seem to be going well, as she and her husband, a contractor, renovate their home, and meet a fun couple next door. Things take a dark turn when they discovery a diary buried within the walls of their house, and a terrifying spirit is awakened.
RESTORATION is slated for a 2016 release and BETHANY is set to release later in 2015.

REATHA GREY STARS IN THIRD SEASON OF “BETTY WHITE’S OFF THEIR ROCKERS”

October 21, 2013

Lifetime Network announced on Friday, October 18th “Betty Whites Off Their Rockers” has been picked up by the network for a twenty episode, third season and will beginning airing in 2014.
Reatha Grey one of the shows very funny and sassy characters will return to the cast funnier than ever.
Veteran actress, Reatha Grey, began her professional career in the 70’s appearing in television series such as "Three's Company" and starring in the cult classic "Soul Vengeance." Dozens of rolls on television, screen, and stage later, Ms. Grey headed The Grey Images Extra Casting Company for almost a decade. After realizing her destiny to entertain through acting was still unfulfilled she returned to the art she has so eloquently mastered in 2008.
Reatha who has also established herself as a stand-up comedian has proven herself time and time again to be a tremendous asset to the series. On the show a group of hilarious and feisty elderly play pranks on members of the younger generation, in the manner of Candid Camera or Punk’d.
Reatha’s motto is “It’s never too late, you’re never too old.” “Working on the show, for a third season, is a blessing. I am thrilled to work with Betty again and can’t wait to get back to pranking young people on the streets of America.” She says.

Betty White's "Off Their Rockers" Sidekick Reatha Grey - BY NICOLE RUSSIN AKA. RICHÁRDE

March 18, 2013

Reatha Grey came out of retirement better than ever. A regular cast member on the sensational NBC comedic reality show, Off Their Rockers, produced by and co-starring the infamous Golden Girl herself, Betty White, Miz Grey is busy. These days, you can catch the former film extras agency head and Three’s Company actress guest starring on How I Met Your Mother, Nickelodeon, HBO’s The Newsroom and Comedy Central…and a stand-up comedy venue near you! Next stop, People Style Watch!

You’re an example of someone who never gives up. And we have young people, people in their 20′s, giving up on their dreams after a year.

One of my sayings is “it’s never too late, you’re never too old! “Too old” is what you perceive it to be. When I turned 28 ˝, I went into a panic about turning 30. It was a year and a half away and yet I obsessed about being old, at 30. A few weeks before my 30th birthday, I was telling a lady how depressed I was because I was turning 30. She smiled and said, “You don’t have to turn 30.” I got excited and said, “Really, I don’t have to turn 30?” She said, “No, you can die!” I hadn’t thought about it that way before. It was at that moment that I realized that everyone doesn’t get to grow old and every day of life is precious. As I grow older, I realize even more how true that is. For a year and a half I was depressed and gave up on my dreams because they hadn’t been realized and I perceived I was going to be too old. Since then I have not stopped dreaming, given up on my dreams or perceived myself as old.

Amazing! Was retirement not challenging enough for your personality?

I’ve never thought of retirement as an option. My grandmother worked literally until the day she died at age 99. Like far to many Americans, I haven’t planned well for retirement so I will, God willing, work well past normal retirement age. I can’t imagine just sitting around, doing nothing, waiting to die. I plan to work, travel, and live life to it’s fullest to the very last breath.
How do you find every day exciting?

The days when I work on Betty White’s Off Their Rockers are especially exciting. I get up, go to some location that may be anywhere in the USA, pull pranks on unsuspecting young people, and they pay me for doing it. I couldn’t ask for a better job.

When I’m not working on the show, I have the life of any other actress. I go to auditions, pray I get work, take acting classes, attend workshops and prepare when I am blessed to get a job.
I love to take great vacations. I love swimming with dolphins and sharks, zip lining is my latest discovery and someday I hope to skydive.

Guests on your show are modern day favorites like Nick Lachey(!), Nicole Richie and Psy of “Gangnam Style” popularity. How does good humor spread to all ages?

It is great meeting some of the pop favorites on the show. How many people can say they learned to dance Gangnam Style from Psy?

Humor crosses all lines, culture, age, even sex. In fact, all cultures seem to find humor in aged sex. That’s one of my things on the show, making sexual advances to young guys or talking about my sexual exploits. People seem to think that older people don’t have sex. I’ll never forget the looks on the faces of the people at a dog park when I started hookin’ up with an old boyfriend right in front of them, or when I’m making out with Lou Beaty Jr., one of the cast members. Would it be funny if we were in our twenties?
I meet people of all ages that love and laugh at our show. One of my favorite stories is the woman who told me that her 6 year old daughter loved the scene where Betty directed Ann Benson and I to make it rain while Michael Yama pole danced. She said “now her daughter wants her to make it rain while she dances.”

What is the show process, from start to finish? How do you make the silliness relatable?

The creative team comes up with concepts. The pranks are assigned to the various pranksters. Everyone that is portrayed as old on the show is really an older person, yes, even the skateboarder. Some that do the harder pranks, like hanging from cars are stunt people, but they are all seniors. We take the concepts and hit the streets with hidden camera crews. We never know what is going to happen because all of the people that we prank are unsuspecting and unscripted. We set them up, play off how they react to us, and comedy ensues.
The Betty wraps, are the scenes that bridge the pranks. They involve Betty, guest stars and the pranksters in scripted skits. Some people actually think that we live in a house together and hang out with Betty everyday. Betty is way too busy to hang out with us all the time, but the time we do spend together is marvelous.

What is Betty White like off camera? Does she play pranks on you or tease you? Do you ever do anything back to her?

Betty White is not only the star of the show, she is also our boss, as the executive producer. You couldn’t ask for a better boss. She is always kind and encouraging. She doesn’t play pranks, but she always makes us laugh. She has a quick wit and is always in a great mood. I don’t think she ever has a bad day and she even laughs at our jokes.

She hosted “Saturday Night Live” due to popular demand. We need to start your “SNL” campaign! Is it something you would do if they asked you to host?

In the ‘70’s they had a contest to be a guest on “SNL,” I entered, but didn’t win. I would love to be a guest on “SNL” but the hosting job might be a little too much for me, however when Justin Timberlake host for the 6th time, I’d love to make a guest appearance. Justin is my latest celebrity crush.

What other professional goals do you have?

I like doing stand-up comedy, I’m working on some sets now. I would love to do a sitcom, a great ensemble piece like Friends or Seinfeld. I have a couple of scripts that I’m looking at right now, but I could be perfectly happy doing Betty White’s Off Their Rockers forever.

My grandmother’s life mission is to humiliate me on a regular basis. Over the years, she asks me things like what sexual things I would refuse to do with a man if asked, why my clothing choices are not more revealing when I need to “show off my bosom” and if I have “exciting experiences with women.” Once, she tried to start a word of mouth rumor about me dating this really handsome older guy who’s now married but whom I never dated for the sake of it…to make me seem sought after like Scarlett O’Hara. I actually blocked her on my old Facebook account because she was writing rude things she shouldn’t have on my wall. Your show in particular concentrates on outrageous elderly like this! What should I do so she stops embarrassing me? All she talks about – when she isn’t gossiping or trolling the Internet in her 90′s via her iPhone – is wanting to date men my age like pro jocks I have interviewed/met, men she once lusted after and wearing revealing clothes. I mean, she’s really nice, she is my granny and I care about her, but she always makes fun of me as she laughs maliciously. She has to be possessed by Gilbert Gottfried.

My grandson told me just the other day that if I try to friend him on Facebook he wouldn’t accept me. You grandchildren are all alike when it comes to us free-spirited grannies.
All jokes aside though, enjoy your grandmother while you can. We won’t be around forever. We suffered you embarrassing us over the years. Peeing in your pants, acting out in public, not doing what we asked you to, etc. when you were young, now indulge us for a few years. You’re old enough for us to have adult conversations with and yet young enough to know what’s still hip and fun, enquiring grannies want to know! Let her have her fun! Keep her blocked from your social networks, but take her to lunch or an interview with one of those jocks, that will give her something to talk about, other than you, for months. She can thank me later.

I cannot believe you’re still out and about doing stand up comedy. How do you bring out your wickedness onto the stage? Do you ever channel a Sasha Fierce side to you who can say anything…uh, someone like my wicked grandmother?

I think we all have a wild side, some more than others. I don’t need to channel a Sasha Fierce, I need to work more to keep the wild side inside. I’ve always been told that I didn’t have much of a filter, performing has always been an acceptable way of my acting out. I bet your grandmother has a book, or movie or something trying to get out that we all need to hear.

You have great skin for your age. Do you do anything special, or is it about you taking care of yourself?

As my grandfather use to say, “If I had known I was going to live this long I would have taken better care of myself.” I thankfully gave up all of my really bad habits in my thirties. I try to take care of myself, eat well, facials and massages.

How do you pick out clothes and makeup for your red carpet appearances? You’re competing with girls like Kristen Stewart! My new goal, and I mean it seriously, is for you to get in “People Style Watch” within a year. It’s never too late to outdo the Young Hollywood crowd. At minimum, you should get in for wearing pretty jewelry!

I love red carpets! When I did my first red carpet I asked an actress friend what should I wear. She said something stylish and age appropriate. When I looked in my closet I realized I didn’t own anything age appropriate. I was just coming out of my mid-life crisis, which was the re-birth of my acting career, and everything I owned looked like an older woman trying to look young, it wasn’t pretty. I went out and started shopping at the stores where my grandmother used to shop. Designers make beautiful clothes for older women that lift and firm the parts that the young girls expose. I’d love to be a spokesmodel for a line of clothes for mature woman, after all we’re the ones with the money.
The same with make-up, as I look at the photos on the red carpet, the more natural look seems to look best. A good line of makeup helps preserve the skin while making you look your best.

Nowadays, you’re doing guest spots on popular shows. “How I Met Your Mother.” “The Newsroom.” Lifetime. For anyone who feels frustrated with not having made it yet in their careers, what can you tell them?

Unless you’re 80 years old and want to be something like a brain surgeon, which takes years of school, start now, no matter what your age. If your dream is something that you trained for but gave up, get back in the game, if you need to go back to school, go. If you think no one will hire you to do that, start your own company. If you have a million dollar idea, this is the right time to put it out there. We live in a wonderful time when literally anything is possible. it’s never too late, you’re never too old.

What’s up for you next on “Off Their Rockers?”

Betty White’s Off Their Rockers is up for Best New Show 2012 and Most Unique Concept for the Reality Wanted Awards – http://www.realitywantedawards.com. We haven’t heard if the show has been picked up for a third season yet, but we all hope so! I can’t wait to get back on the streets pranking those youngsters and hangin’ out with Betty and the gang.

Actress Reatha Grey, “Off Her Rocker” and Following Her Dreams By Margie Barron, Tulocan Times

March 14, 2013

“You’re never too old, and it’s never too late,” insists Reatha Grey, a fabulous woman who has embraced an acting career with gusto when most folks are thinking about retiring. Reatha says she didn’t want to retire at age 60-plus, so she found the perfect gig, as one of the senior regulars on NBC’s wacky hidden-camera hit series Betty White’s Off Their Rockers. And judging by the emails from the fans of the show, Reatha is a big hit too.

“I have embraced technology and I answer my fan mail on Facebook and tweets. The fans like the crazy stuff we do and want to know if the stunts we do are real or staged. They are absolutely real,” she reveals.

Reatha has done films, commercials, and sitcoms, and now she’s delighted to work with Betty White, who is an inspiration for older actresses in this era of aging Baby Boomers. “It’s nice that talented actresses can work longer nowadays. They don’t have to disappear from ages 40 to 60.”

There have been many jobs for Reatha over the years, actress, casting, public relations, and even missionary. She’s had her own company, and even worked as a tour guide at Universal Studios. But performing brings her the greatest joy. She toured with USO shows in the ’70s. In 2011 she starred in the film Walk by Faith II: After the Honeymoon, and she can been seen in the series The Protector and The Newsroom.

“I love making people laugh,” she beams. “With Off Their Rockers I have the opportunity to spread the laughter. There’s not enough in this world.” So she occasionally does stand-up at comedy clubs. Reatha also does speaking engagements, and her favorite subject is getting older people to use the new technology. “The longer you wait, the harder it will get.”

With all of her life experiences she has learned, “Do it now. Follow your dreams because tomorrow is not promised. Whatever your heart wants, you should pursue it. I have a more successful acting career now than when I was young. And I’m having the time of my life.”

-Ratings Breakdown:
New sitcom BFF was a big fat flop on NBC, but the positive news for the network was respectable sampling for the Wednesday 8 p.m. time period debut of Betty White’s Off Their Rockers. Everyone loves that Betty!

Fox won this first Wednesday in April overall, with an overnight advantage of 4.2 rating points above second-place CBS. In the distant No. 3 spot was another night of almost all repeats on ABC, followed by NBC and, of course, The CW.

Betty White’s Off Their Rockers finished third in the 8 p.m. half-hour on NBC, with a 5.1 rating/9 share in the overnights. Comparably, that beat the season (or series) finale of Whitney one week earlier (3.3/ 5 on March 28) by 55 percent, and year-ago game show occupant Minute To Win it (2.2/ 3 on 4/06/11) by 132 percent. It was also NBC’s top metered market household rating in that half-hour since November 30, 2011 (Christmas in Rockefeller Center). While you need to keep in mind that competing The Middle (#4: 3.1/ 5) on ABC was a repeat, you can consider the time period premiere of Betty White’s Off Their Rockers a “winner.”

Ever since Candid Camera way back in TV show history there has been a wicked delight in watching ordinary people be caught up in pranks that wind up being out loud laughably funny. Shows such as Totally Hidden Video, TV’s Bloopers and Practical Jokes, Pranked, and Punk’d have each had something in common and that was to watch as ordinary people who do ordinary things can be extremely funny when things don’t go just quite right. Betty White takes that brand of humor to another level when her crew of blue haired senior citizens turn the tables on much younger people. They play pranks on the young resilient generation and show they still have a broad sense of humor too. Starring and hosted by the venerable 90 year old Betty White who has seen her career blossom and her life become increasingly busy recently gives us the chance to laugh out loud at ourselves through the cameras provided by NBC. If the younger set were to play practical jokes on the seniors the show would lose much of its humor but in this case the senior citizens prevail. Also on Betty White’s Off Their Rockers are Madison Dylan (Entourage, Accidentally on Purpose), Elizabeth Carlisle (Pretty Little Liars, Parenthood), Reatha Grey (Baby Boom, The Fabulous Baker Boys), and Ann Benson (A Little Push, Patrick Carman’s Dark Eden).

Other pranks include asking strangers to text shockingly inappropriate messages, a man taking matters into his own hands when he needs a tooth extracted and a hungover woman with a surprising occupation sharing far too much about her weekend in Las Vegas.

The recently divorced Alex (Amanda Peet, "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip") is a high-strung lawyer who is raising her young daughter, Charlie (Joey King, "Ramona and Beezus") as a single mom. She downsizes into a smaller house and hires charismatic Pete (David Walton, "Perfect Couples"), a free-spirited ladies' man and recovering gambling addict who desperately needs this gig with Alex to jumpstart his life -- and prove that he is no longer a screw-up.

Also starring are Margo Harshman ("Sorority Row") and Jeffrey Tambor ("Arrested Development"). The single-camera comedy is from writer and executive producer Tad Quill ("Scrubs," "Spin City") and director Craig Zisk ("Nurse Jackie," "Weeds"). The series is produced by Universal Television and Rosalita Productions Inc.

"Best Friends Forever," from executive producer Scot Armstrong ("Old School," "Hangover 2"), is a new comedy about old friends, new beginnings and awkward situations. Jessica St. Clair ("Bridesmaids") and Lennon Parham ("Accidentally on Purpose") star as Jessica and Lennon, best friends who live on opposite sides of the country with the men in their lives. When Jessica is served divorce papers, Lennon convinces her to return home to Brooklyn and back into the apartment they used to share. Soon, the girls fall into old habits: movie marathons and late-night, girl-talk sessions -- none of which is good news for Lennon's live-in boyfriend, Joe (Luka Jones, Upright Citizens Brigade). Stephen Schneider ("Happy Endings") and Daija Owens also star.

"Best Friends Forever" is produced by Universal Television and American Work, Inc. Along with Armstrong, St. Clair, Parham, Alexa Junge ("Friends," "United States of Tara"), Fred Savage ("Party Down") and Ravi Nandan are executive producers. Donick Cary is consulting producer, while Keith Raskin serves as producer on the series.

After a strong sneak-peek debut in January, "Betty White's Off Their Rockers" takes senior stereotypes and blows them out of the water with a cast of sassy septuagenarians who are hip, sexy and ready to party. America's favorite comedy sweetheart sends a fearless band of senior citizens to the streets to pull shockingly hilarious pranks on the younger generation in this outrageously funny "hidden camera" show. In the vein of "Punk'd," the show delivers cleverly crafted comedic stunts, candid moments and priceless reactions captured by hidden cameras. Sassy seniors are on a mission, targeting unsuspecting young "marks" with their irreverent behavior.

Chris Coelen, Matilda Zoltowski, White, Scott Hallock, Kevin Healey, Tim Van Aelst and Tim Gibbons are the executive producers of the series produced by Kinetic Content in association with Hallock Healey Entertainment.

What is a Bacon Number?

Perhaps you have heard of the "Kevin Bacon Game", a.k.a. "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon". This is based on the theory of "Six Degrees of Separation" which states that everyone in the world can be connected by six or less people (i.e. Bob knows Jim, Jim knows Anne, Anne knows Steve, therefore Bob can be connected to Steve through Jim and Anne, even though Bob and Steve have never met).

The "Kevin Bacon Game" is based on a similar theory, tracing actors' connections to Kevin Bacon based on actors with whom they have appeared in films.
